I thought the initial qualifying the Sunday before the actual race was very telling.
It’s Hendrick Motorsports that stood out for me. With Hendrick Motorsports drivers grabbing all 4 of the top qualifying spots, as well as winning the pole for the actual race.

Unfortunately, for Hendrick Motorsports, it hasn’t led to as many victories as I am sure the team would like to have especially with how well their cars have ran at the Daytona International Speedway. The last victory coming in 2014, when Dale Earnhardt Jr. earned the checkered flag at that year’s race.

My first pick is the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Champion, Joey Logano himself. At the time of this article Joey Logano was a co-favorite with Brad Keslowski at +800 odds to win the race.
When deciding between the two for me I felt that Brad Keselowski falls short of the checkered flag too many times. He has failed to finish his last four races at the Daytona International Speedway. So, in my opinion I will take the driver that is coming off a very successful 2018 Racing season. Joey Logano at +800 is a good enough value for me to make a small wager but Joey isn’t the only driver that deserves some attention. As well as not being my pick to win the 2019 Daytona 500.
A popular name this year seems to be Ryan Blaney. He drives the No. 12 for Team Penske. He is currently sitting at +1200.
Blaney’s recent success at the Daytona International Speedway has the so-called experts drooling at the chance to pick him to win this race. With his 7th place finish last season and multiple top 10 finishes on the same track no wonder Ryan Blaney is a name that peaks multiple interests.
Next, I am going to back one of the Hendrick Motorsports drivers that was able to finish fourth in the first qualifying race. That driver was Chase Elliott.
Driving the No. 9 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports, Chase Elliott is the son of former Winston Cup champion Bill Elliott. So, he has the pedigree it takes to win a race of this magnitude.
Chase also has had success at the Daytona International Speedway. He has won the pole in two previous qualifiers in 2016 and 2017. He also finished 6th at the 2018 Daytona 500 so for being as young as he is and already shows the type of success it takes to win the race, I feel safe putting a value bet on Chase Elliott at +1200.
It is only a matter of time before Chase has the type of year that proves he is deserving of being the most popular driver on the racing circuit in 2019.
Along the lines of drivers having something to prove and having the car to do it, keep an eye on Ricky Stenhouse Jr at +1500, Bubba Wallace at +4000, and Paul Menard at +3500.

I have written with academic glee on the blog about how different NASCAR is that its season starts with the most important competition. But look again at the world of sports, and it’s not really that uncommon for athletes to be thrust into combat right away with everything on the line.

It’s fair to say that there was a “fairy tale” element to Austin Dillon’s thrilling win at the Daytona 500 last season. Dillon survived an epic crash with 6 laps to go in the race, then wound up contacting leader Aric Almirola and brushing his competitor’s car aside.
You can hear that the broadcast team was not entirely thrilled with the fashion in which Dillon won. That’s kind of a microcosm of where the 28-year-old North Carolinian has been in his career path for a while. Talented, successful, up-and-coming at the NASCAR level while greatly accomplished on other levels as a young man. But somehow, Ace doesn’t get the respect of a true defending champion.
His 2018 was inconsistent. After some promising finishes in the top 5, Dillon sank out of contention in the Cup race and slammed his automobile into the outside wall twice during a race in Charlotte in September.
Dillon is back with an old friend, Danny Stockman, who helped him win Truck Series and Nationwide Series titles earlier in the decade. Does he deserve such long (+3500) betting odds for Daytona? A Rochester Hills, Michigan native, Keselowski scored his first career Cup title in 2012 and has competed in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup series playoffs in 7 of the last 8 seasons.
However, I’m not buying this racer as a clear and stable favorite. Keselowski has won on the track at Daytona before, but his best finish at the Great American Race was a 3rd place finish in 2014. He finished 8th last season after a series of bad-luck finishes that potentially could have been improved upon with better teamwork and forethought.Joey Logano (+825)
2018 was an historic season for Logano, a 28-year-old native of Connecticut and one of the best racecar drivers in America. The driver of a #22 Shell Ford won his first career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship for Team Penske, clinching the title with a victory in the final race of the season at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

This 43-year-old veteran has built an illustrious Cup career since his 2001 rookie campaign. In many ways, Harvick is simply the epitome of consistency. Harvick and the Busch team have earned a trip to the playoffs in each of the past 5 seasons.
Harvick dominated in 2018 with over half a dozen wins, including victories at Atlanta, Las Vegas, Richmond, and the All-Star race at Charlotte. He then came up just short of a championship with a 3rd place finish in the final standings.
He’ll seek a 2nd victory at the Great American Race in 2019, but is the Daytona track becoming a bugaboo for an otherwise brilliant racer the way the Indianapolis Motor Speedway plagued Mario Andretti?
Poker antes and blinds. Harvick’s lone Daytona 500 win came in 2007 and he has not finished in the top 5 since 2016.Kyle Busch (+1200)
The younger of the Busch brothers, Kyle has come nail-bitingly close to capturing another Monster Energy title in only a few competitive seasons. The 33-year old driver of #18 M&M’s Toyota has earned a trip to the Championship 4 in each of the past 4 seasons, though his lone title came in 2015.
With 51 career Cup series victories, Busch ranks behind only the legendary Jimmie Johnson for most wins by an active driver. Busch scored 8 more victories in 2018, including wins at Bristol, Richmond, and Charlotte. Busch would come up short in the Championship 4 at the Homestead season finale and finished 4th in the final standings.
Despite having one of the most impressive NASCAR careers in recent memory, Busch has yet to see the winner’s circle at the Daytona 500. His best career finish at the Great American Race was 3rd in 2016.Aric Almirola (+1300)
Almirola has the toughest psychological job of all drivers in the 2019 race. He must work to climb back into a winning position, and then overcome any sense of Deja Vu.
The 34-year-old Almirola is looking to build off of his best season to date. A native of Tampa, Florida, he picked up his first win with Stewart-Haas Racing at Talladega in ‘18 and earned a trip to the playoffs for the 2nd time in his career. The Cuban Missile narrowly missed the Championship 4 and finished 5th in the final 2018 standings.
